The Bushel & Peck's Story
| Bushel & Peck's Local Market is a store, restaurant and honest food place. It's also about community. Sharing a good meal, exchanging ideas and recipes, lounging about reading books in the cafe. Just plain enjoying life.
Bushel & Peck's Local Market resulted from the ideas and enthusiasm of many, many customers, civic leaders, farmers, food producers and regular ole' people. The market is located at State and Grand, in downtown Beloit, Wisconsin. It occupies 6000 square feet of retail space and has a full kitchen and an old fashioned lunch counter. The focus of the market is local and organic foods, along with a cafe and deli serving handmade meals. It is a marvelous space with a lot of history and a very bright future. We have simple standards that most other stores and restaurants can't even begin to imagine. Meat ~ We source meats locally from sustainable family farms. Animals are grass fed exclusively whenever possible. When grains are fed to animals, it is non-GMO (genetically modified) grain. Animals are on pasture as much as they like. Eggs ~ We use only local, farm fresh eggs from outside, roaming birds. Milk ~ Milk is sourced from Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus, Wisconsin. Their dairy cows are never given rGBH (a hormone to increase lactation in dairy cows) Cheese ~ Milk is sourced from local cheese producers who produce cheese with non-rGBH milk. Bakery ~ No bleached flours are used, no manufactured sweeteners are allowed. |
Soda & Soft Drinks ~ No soft drinks contain high fructose corn syrup. Bottled Water ~ We do not sell water in plastic bottles, instead we offer free, delicious Beloit tap water. (Bottled water is a huge profit product for most restaurants. Huge. We refuse to compromise common sense on this product.) Coffee & Tea ~ We brew fair trade & organic coffees and teas. Our flavored syrups do not contain high fructose corn syrup. We do not use pre made mixes for blended drinks. Produce Sourced locally when in season. Much of our cooked, winter produce comes from our freezers, where we stockpile local produce for out of season meals. Cafe Meals ~ All cooking is done on site using ingredients that meet our standard. We make all of our soups, salads & entrees from scratch.Pickles & Jams ~ All of our homemade pickles and jams are made using local ingredients, sourcing certified organic when possible. Our USDA organic certification for food processing is in motion and pending approval. |
